Social Venture Partners Annual General Meeting & 10 Year Celebration
November 4, 2010
10 years, 15 organizations, 1.7 million dollars! SVP has come a long way since founded in 2000. As November 2010 marks our 10th year anniversary, we took the opportunity to celebrate our achievements and look forward to the next decade on our Annual General Meeting at the Glencoe Club.
By highlighting the work that all the Partners, Investees, volunteers, and community supporters have done over the ten years, SVP thanked those who have been dedicated and involved in making a difference in our community. Going forward, SVP also announced our new direction encompassing broader inclusion of participants and innovation of grantmaking.
With the energy and encouragement from more than 70 attendees, SVP is ready to pave the road for the next decade of venture philanthropy in Calgary.
Social Venture Partners Give - Grant Celebration 2010
June 29, 2010
SVP Give was the first time we did our grantmaking announcement in a public setting - in the middle of Eau Claire Market. With the generous in-kind donations and volunteering from Eau Claire Market, Joanne Toller from The Communicators, Tara Robinson from CTV, Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids, Vincent Chow photography, and Zinc Ventures, SVP presented $120,000 in capacity building grants to our three current Investees (Connections Counselling, Calgary Youth Justice Society and EvenStart for Children Foundation) and announced our new relationship with Autism Aspergers Friendship Society.
Partners and community supporters brought families, friends, and colleagues to join us in the celebration of the work and impact of the local nonprofits we support. SVP also took the opportunity to thank the Investment Committee for the time and effort they put in over the past eight months in selecting our new Investees from a pool of twenty nine applicants.
It was a successful celebration during a beautiful day! Thank you to all of our Partners and participants for your support. We look forward to a great year with our Investees.
2009 Annual General Meeting with Tom Jackson
September 29, 2009
A short and sweet business meeting followed by a powerful presentation by Tom Jackson and his wife Alison. More than fifty guests including SVP Partners, current and former Investees, and community supporters attended. Our 2009-2010 Board of Directors was elected, and brings new ideas and energy for our year ahead. Many thanks to Art Gallery of Calgary, Nectar Desserts, and the wonderful crew at James Joyce for the great services and kind sponsorships.
To top it all off, we raised $275 from the silent auction of SVP Kid's hand painted ceremic tiles for their grantmaking program this year. Thank you for your support!
2008-2009 Grant and Graduation Celebration
June 11, 2009
SVP Partners, Investees, and Supporters gathered at 100 Wines to toast the dispersement of $110,000 in grants to our Investees: Connections Counselling, Calgary Youth Justice, and EvenStart for Children's Foundation. We were also proud to highlight our graduating Investees, Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids and Calgary Urban Vibe, who partnered with SVP over the past five years.
The evening was a moment to connect, to say Thank You, and to honor the work done by both SVP Partners and Investees during the past year.
Chew on This! Point of View: Corporate Giving?
April 21, 2009
SVP Calgary
SVP Calgary Partners and Supporters enjoyed discussion and debate around corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate giving last night with Sheila Carruthers and David Finch.
Why do companies give? Is it effective? What is the difference between philanthropic giving and CSR? These were only a fraction of the questions discussed.
While no consensus was reached, the conversation always lead back to the notion, "It's all about relationships." One of SVP Calgary's fundamental goals.
Stay tuned to our website for a more comprehensive update with video and Podcast. Until then, enjoy this 30-second clip from Sheila's comments.
2008 Annual General Meeting
November 27, 2008
Pioneer Lodge
Partners gathered for the Annual General Meeting on November 27 at the Pioneer Lodge. Following a BRIEF! business meeting, the real spirit of the night began with a wonderful dinner and short presentations from our Lead Partners and Investee Directors. It was a perfect opportunity to hear more about our successful work this past year and upcoming projects.
Many thanks were given during the evening for the past year's efforts, including to: Cammie Kaulback and Noelle Bacalso, our past Executive Directors; Don Rempel, Erin Waite and Paul Bergmann, retiring Board members; Erin Waite for her work on the new marketing material; all our Lead Partners for their tremendous work with the Investees; Michele Dauphinee for her wonderful assistance to Krystyna this Fall, particularly in planning this successful event; to Krystyna Williamson for stepping in as interim-ED while searching for our new staff.
The newly elected board appointed its officers at the following board meeting, as well as inviting Brad Zumwalt to return to the board to facilitate his support of Michele Fugiel Gartner as she settles into her new role as Executive Director in 2009.
The new Board slate is: Chairman: Krystyna Williamson; Secretary: Jonathon Luk; Treasurer: Keenan Cannady; Directors: Hugh Williamson, Gordon Case, Frank Mele, Brad Zumwalt; SVPI Rep: Andy Williamson (Ex-Oficio).
This coming year our organization will focus on supporting our Lead Partners to complete capacity building projects in our current Investees, and capturing the impact stories from our past work in the community.
We must continue to share the stories of our successes, both personal and operational, to attract more supporters of this model.
Let's all " Invest. Engage. Advance." The work we can accomplish together matters!
