SVP Families: 43rd Annual Pathway and River Cleanup
May 2, 2010

Edge Park, Edgemont

Our SVP families, staff, and volunteers headed back out to the Edge Park Ravine area for a morning of clean-up.  We missed the forecasted rain, but were astounded by the amount of snow still on the hillsides.  (It's May!) Compared to the year before, the area was pretty clean, but we wondered if most was still under the snow.

Just as last year, our greatest clean up was near the school where one of our kids found a discarded ceramic house in the woods.  Perhaps someone's art project that they didn't like?!

The first Pathway & River Cleanup was instigated by 12 year-old Sandra Crawford. While walking along the Elbow River bank in early spring 1967, she saw an entire mattress lying in the river. She tried to haul the mattress out on her own, but failed. She wrote a letter to the Calgary Herald decrying the mess. Since then thousands of Calgarians have shown their sense of community spirit and pride by volunteering each year in this great cause.

Thanks to all who came out to join us!  We'll see you next year!

SVP Calgary Partners & Kids Holiday Hamper Party
Dec 8, 2009

SVP Calgary Office

We had great turnout of 40 Partners & Kids wrapping over 100 gifts in total for single mother Jessica and her 3 children Jadin, Serenity, and Konnor. The SVP Calgary office turned into Santa's Workshop full of little elves.  Families were busy wrapping, chatting, and eating cookies to the tune of Christmas carols. We filled not only the hamper for Jessica's family, but will be delivering EvenStart with extra gift cards, clothes, movie passes for others in need. Our office now is stacked with presents waiting to be delivered next week!

A big Thank You from EvenStart:

"The greatest impact was that this merriment took the form of a 'working' Christmas Party...your approach was refreshing the truly exemplifies the giving spirit that drives your organization and its memeber - even its littlest members! Their eagerness to tie that bow or over scotch-tape that gift was inspiring and humbling." - Anne Harris, EvenStart.

Tile Painting for "Mosaic of Calgary Kids"
Sept 20, 2009

Colour Me Mine, Kensington

Kicking off a great year of programming, more than 25 SVP kids and parents gathered at Colour Me Mine ceremic art studio to paint tiles portraying what Calgary means to them. Through art, we hope to inspire kids to think about youth issues in the local community and become more involved in being a part of the solution.

The tiles are to be framed and silent auctioned at our Annual General Meeting on Sept 29, 2009. All proceeds from the silent auction will go towards grantmaking funding for SVP Kids this year.

42nd Annual Calgary Pathway and River Clean Up
May 3, 2009

Edge Park, Edgemont

SVP Kids, Partners, and Supporters joined 1900 Calgary Volunteers in this year's clean-up. After a pancake breakfast at Stu Peppard Arena, our team headed to our designated clean up area in Edgemont. Armed with gloves, garbage bags, and hazard flags, the SVP team collected over 10 bags of garbage and recyclables.

The team picked up loads of candy wrappers, cigarette butts, and paper products. Among some of the most unusual finds - a softball mitt and ball, a parking sign, a rubber ball, a frisbee, and a $20 bill (to be added to the SVP Kids fund).

Thanks to all who joined us! We look forward to participating again next year.
