EvenStart for Children Foundation
EvenStart can't cure, but they welcome children
as they come, and start from where they are.
Executive Directors: Ilona Boyce and Anne Harris (Funding Director/Acting ED)
"The children who come to the EvenStart program, are on average, 70% to 90% behind their peers in over half of their growth areas. If these children stay until us they are five years old, we can close the gap, on average, to 10% within that of their peers. If no intervention occurs, these children often experience school failure by Grade Three."
Impact
Carrie came to the EvenStart program quiet and invisible. She had learned to survive by not being noticed. Children like Carrie retreat into their own inner worlds, searching for comfort from a frightening environment. Withdrawal is often the only way for self-protection and survival.
An inner retreat is this child's first chance to say to the outside world. "This is my choice!"
EvenStart's challenge is to assist Carrie in becoming more like a regular five year old. Carrie likes computers. Computers are safe, yet interactive, so this is where we can begin.
